WHAT IS STARFIELD?
2馃殌 In this next generation role-playing game singleplayer set amongst the stars, create any character you want, go where you want and explore with unparalleled freedom, with a level of immersion where you are not just playing Starfield but you are living in this universe, feeling like you've had an impact on the world. (1, 2, 3)
4馃殌 The game is set in the year 2330 in an dangerous area that extends outward from our solar system for approximately 50 light years.
Around 20 years before from the start of the game, the 2 largest factions in the Settled Systems, the United Colonies that represents the future of space republic idealized, and Freestar Collective which is the space western fantasy, engage in the Bloody Colony war. (1)
5馃殌 Regarding Skyrim, Starfield is a more grounded game and a grounded setting about exploration, looking for a beliable universe with a focus more realistic-scientific, giving Starfield a different take on how making everything. (1)
6馃殌 It’s kind of like Skyrim in terms of the structure of the game, where you're going to be who you want to be, and then there's different factions that you can join and really carve your own path with factions like Ryujin Industries which represents corporate life in Neon, or the Crimson Fleet that they're not just space pirates, but you can join them, siding with their goals or working as agent undercover to report back to your superiors. (1, 2)
"...our sense of scale had to be totally readjusted in making a game on a planetary surface as we've always done before, and now where you have these very vast distances against this black starry background. It is a blank canvas, and a massive playground and all the pieces are there for you to write your own story." (1)
7馃殌 The skill system with a approach more hardcore follows Skyrim system with a bit from things BGS has done in Fallout and Elder Scrolls, going back to some things that BGS used to do in games long ago, letting players express the character they want to be, choosing the background, the traits, defining your character, all those stats, doing those again in a new way. (1, 2, 3)
8馃殌 With 150.000 lines of dialogue (Skyrim-60.000), Starfield uses photogrammetry to scan real world models (similar to the tech Starfield does in the landscapes) in order to believe that your avatar is a real person, and you're interacting with real people to be as impactful as possible the interactions.(1, 2)
When you're exploring, your companion makes some comments off the cuff about something that you're checking out or something that just happened.
9馃殌 During your travels you'll discover many unique environments, some lush and abundant with life, other "Blade Runner style". (1, 2)
10馃殌 The mechanics of the world are entirely different regarding Skyrim, with a lot of new systems thanks to new tech (hardware, Creation Engine 2), but it has similarities like being able to touch and take everything, first and third person, cycle day-night.
馃ЛTraveling in space is like flight in the '40s, still dangerous to go and explore, even though lots of people do. It's gamified but it's not as punishing as actual space travel but it feels like traveling in space.
馃ЛThe new persuasion system is like a mini game thing where you have to think about, "What's my risk here?" "Which one do I want to choose?", feeling like you're having a conversation where you're actually trying to persuade somebody of something, and not a system where there was definitely the right thing to say. (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 )
"For me, Starfield is the Han Solo simulator. Get in a ship, explore the galaxy, do fun stuff."
Ashley Cheng, Bethesda Managing Director. Entrevista Washington Post junio 2021. (1)
